Pete Doherty Biography

Pete Doherty was born March 12, 1979, in Hexham, Northumberland, England. The son of a major in the British Army, he spent much of his early life jettisoning between garrisons in Catterick, Belfast, Germany, Bedworth, Dorset, and Larnaca, near the southeast coast of Cyprus. That constant upheaval combined with his father’s strict disciplinary approach to parenting eventually caused Doherty to rebel, and he moved to London after high school.

Left to his own devices, Doherty began to take an active interest in the city’s thriving punk scene and within months he formed a band with his flatmate and fellow musician Carl BarĂ¢t. The group, which became known as The Libertines, achieved a modicum of success in 2002 when their debut album Up the Bracket hit No. 35 on the UK Albums chart. That was followed in 2004 by The Libertines, a startingly biographical album that topped the UK charts en route to achieving platinum certification
